Equipment Dimensions
Every racket, string and ball is a sheet of numbers — and once you can read them, you stop guessing and start choosing.
A racket is not chosen by colour. Behind every frame on the wall sits a small column of figures — head size, weight, balance, stiffness, string pattern — and each one quietly decides how the racket will feel in your hand and how the ball will leave your strings. The same is true of the string itself, of the tension it is pulled to, and of the ball you hit. Most players never learn to read these numbers, so they buy on looks and brand and hope. This chapter teaches you to read the whole spec sheet — racket, string, tension, ball, grip and shoe — so that when you choose, you choose on purpose.
Every number is a trade-off
There is no "best" racket, no "best" string, no "best" tension. There are only trade-offs. Every specification buys you one quality by asking you to give up another. A bigger head gives you a more forgiving sweet spot but costs you a little control. A stiffer frame returns more power but passes more shock into your arm. A tighter string bed sharpens precision but flattens out power. Understanding equipment is simply understanding these exchanges — and then deciding which side of each exchange suits your body and your game.
One rule runs underneath the entire chapter, and it matters most for the youngest players: equipment should fit the player as they are today, not the player you hope they become. A frame bought "to grow into" is the single most common — and most damaging — mistake in the sport. We will return to it.
Read the gear the way you'd read a spec sheet: every figure means something, and every figure costs something.
Anatomy of a racket
Before the numbers make sense, the vocabulary has to. A modern racket is a single moulded frame divided into a handful of named parts. Learn these once and every specification afterwards becomes readable.
- Head — the oval frame that holds the strings; its enclosed area is the head size.
- String bed — the woven surface of strings that actually strikes the ball.
- Sweet spot — the area that returns the cleanest, most powerful, least jarring shot.
- Throat — the triangular opening below the head that joins frame to shaft and stiffens it.
- Shaft — the short section between throat and handle.
- Handle — the grip you hold; an eight-sided (octagonal) core wrapped in a grip.
- Butt & butt cap — the flared bottom that stops the hand slipping; the cap usually shows the grip size.
- Grommets — the plastic strip and eyelets the strings pass through, protecting them at the frame.
- Bumper guard — the plastic shield on top of the head that takes scrapes from mishits and the court.
The racket's measurable specs
These are the numbers a manufacturer prints on the frame and the spec page. Here is what each one is, and — more usefully — what it does to your game.
Head size
Area of the string bed in square inches. Larger = bigger, more forgiving sweet spot and more power; smaller = more control and a more precise feel. Bands: midsize 85–97, midplus 98–104 (modern standard), oversize 105–115, super-oversize 116+ sq in.
Length
Tip to butt. Standard adult 27 in (68.58 cm); juniors 19/21/23/25/26 in; some adult "extended" frames reach the 29 in limit. Longer = more reach but harder to swing and control.
Weight
Given strung (ready to play) or unstrung (bare). Strings + overgrip add ~15–20 g, so compare like with like. Heavier = more stability/power and absorbs shock but tires the arm; lighter = quicker but pushed around by a heavy ball. Bands: light 255–285 g, medium 285–305 g, heavy 305–340 g+.
Balance
Where the weight sits. Head-light = mass toward the handle, nimble (typical of heavier player frames); head-heavy = mass toward the tip, more power but more sluggish (typical of lighter frames). Given in mm from the butt, or in "points" head-light/head-heavy (1 point = 1/8 inch from centre).
Swingweight
How heavy the racket feels in motion when you swing it, not held still. A racket can be light on the scale yet swing heavy if weight is toward the tip. Higher = more stability and power but more effort. Typical ~280–360.
Twistweight & stiffness
Twistweight = resistance to twisting on off-centre hits (higher = more stable on mishits); stiffness = the "RA" flex rating (~60–75): flexible (low RA) flexes more, less power, gentler on the arm; stiff (high RA) more power but more shock to wrist and elbow.
Beam width
Frame thickness from the side, in mm. Thin (19–22 mm) flexes, favours control/feel; thick (24–30 mm) is stiffer, favours power; many frames vary the beam.
String pattern
Mains × crosses. Open (16×19) = fewer, wider strings that bite for more spin and power but move/wear faster; dense (18×20) = more, tighter strings for control, a flatter predictable response and longer life, less spin.
Frame material
Most serious frames are graphite (carbon fibre), often blended with fibreglass/basalt/Kevlar; cheap beginner frames are aluminium/alloy (heavier, durable, inexpensive).
The legal limits
The International Tennis Federation sets the outer boundaries every racket must respect (Rule 4, "The Racket"). Inside these limits manufacturers are free; outside them a frame is illegal for sanctioned play.
- Overall length ≤ 73.66 cm (29 in).
- Overall width ≤ 31.75 cm (12.5 in).
- Strung surface ≤ 39.37 cm (15.5 in) long by 29.21 cm (11.5 in) wide.
- The hitting surface must be flat and a uniform pattern of crossed strings.
- No built-in source of energy — nothing that actively adds power during a point.
Although 29 inches is legal, the entire professional tour plays at the classic 27 inches. The limits exist mostly to prevent radical designs, not to describe what champions actually use.

Construction & gauge
The frame gets the attention, but the strings are what touch the ball. Two rackets with identical frames can play completely differently depending on what is woven inside them. Strings are described by their material, their thickness and their shape.
Material families
- Natural gut — from cow intestine. Finest feel, best comfort and tension stability, highest price. The benchmark.
- Synthetic gut (nylon) — the all-round, inexpensive default; balanced, no strong weakness; sensible for most club players.
- Multifilament — hundreds of fine fibres imitating gut; soft and arm-friendly; the comfort choice for elbow/wrist trouble.
- Polyester / co-poly — a single stiff filament that grips for spin and resists movement for control; the advanced choice, but firm on the arm and loses tension fastest.
- Kevlar / aramid — extremely stiff, almost unbreakable, for chronic breakers; harsh; usually only in a hybrid's mains.
- Hybrid — two different strings, mains and crosses chosen separately (e.g. durable poly main + soft gut cross).
Gauge (thickness)
Given as a gauge number — and counter-intuitively, the higher the number the thinner the string. Thinner = more spin and a crisper feel but breaks sooner; thicker = lasts longer and feels solid, less spin. Ladder: 15 (≈1.41 mm, most durable), 16 (≈1.30 mm, durable standard), 17 (≈1.25 mm, spin/feel standard), 18 (≈1.15 mm, thin/lively), 19 (≈1.00 mm, thinnest/max bite/shortest life). An "L" after a gauge (16L, 17L) means a half-step thinner.

The one number you can change every week
Of every figure in this chapter, tension is the one you control most easily and most often. It is how tightly the strings are pulled when the racket is strung, and the same frame and string can feel like a different racket at a different tension.
Tension is measured in pounds (lb) or kilograms (kg) — 50 lb is about 22.7 kg. Most rackets are strung somewhere in the 40–65 lb (18–30 kg) range, and every frame has a recommended range printed on the throat. Use the control below to feel the trade-off.
Higher tension (tighter)
A tighter string bed flexes less. It gives you control, precision and a firmer, flatter response — the ball goes where you aim it. The cost: less power, a smaller sweet spot, and more shock into the arm. Control players who supply their own power string tighter.
Lower tension (looser)
A looser string bed acts like a trampoline. It gives you more power, more comfort and more spin potential as the strings move and snap back. The cost: less precision, and a tendency for the ball to fly long if you over-hit. Players who want easy depth and a gentler feel string looser.

Every type
A tennis ball looks simple and is anything but. The ITF defines it precisely (Rule 3, "The Ball"), approves several distinct types for different surfaces and conditions, and there are two ways to build one, two grades of felt, and a whole family of slower balls for children. Here is the full picture.
Core specifications (standard ball)
- Diameter 6.54–6.86 cm (≈2.57–2.70 in)
- Mass 56.0–59.4 g
- Bounce — dropped from 254 cm onto concrete it must rebound roughly 135–147 cm
- Deformation — a hardness test measures how much the ball squashes under load and springs back, keeping every approved ball within a narrow stiffness window
- Colour — optic yellow, the ITF standard since 1972 for visibility, especially on television
The four official play types
- Type 1 (fast) — firmer, for slower surfaces like clay.
- Type 2 (medium) — the standard all-court ball.
- Type 3 (slow) — a larger ball (≈7.00–7.30 cm) that meets more air resistance and plays slower, for fast surfaces and developing players.
- High Altitude — modified, for play above ≈1,219 m (4,000 ft) where thin air would make a normal ball fly too much.
Construction — pressurised vs pressureless
Pressurised balls are sealed with compressed air inside the core — lively and crisp, the match standard — but once the can is opened the air slowly escapes and the ball goes flat within weeks, whether or not it is hit. Pressureless balls get their bounce from the rubber shell itself — they never go dead (in fact they grow livelier as the felt wears), feel heavier and harder at first, and are the right choice for practice, ball machines and teaching, lasting for months.
Felt grade
Regular-duty felt is thinner, for clay and indoor courts; extra-duty felt is thicker and tighter to survive abrasive hard courts; high-altitude felt is tuned for thin air.

Sizing your handle
The grip is the only part of the racket your body actually touches, and the wrong size quietly causes more harm than any other spec. Grip size is the distance around the octagonal handle.
The finger test. Hold the racket in an eastern forehand grip; you should fit the index finger of your other hand snugly into the gap between your fingertips and the base of your palm. No gap = too small; the finger not fitting = too big.
A grip too small makes you squeeze harder to stop it twisting, straining the forearm; a grip too big reduces wrist mobility and also strains the arm. When in doubt, size down — you can always build a grip up.
The most overlooked equipment
Tennis is played on the feet, in sharp sideways bursts — and the shoe is the one piece of equipment most players never think about until an ankle rolls. A tennis shoe is built for lateral movement: a supportive, low-to-the-ground chassis, a durable toe for the server's drag, and a non-marking outsole matched to the court. Running shoes are genuinely dangerous on a tennis court — built only for forward motion, with a high cushioned heel and no sideways support, they invite rolled ankles.
Outsoles by surface
- Clay — a full herringbone pattern that grips the loose surface and sheds clay so it doesn't clog.
- Hard court — a tougher, modified-herringbone rubber built to survive abrasion; durability guarantees (often around six months) are common.
- Grass — pimpled or nubbed soles that grip without tearing the turf.
- Carpet / indoor — a flat, non-marking sole.
Fit
A snug heel, with about a thumb's width of room at the toe. Tennis shoes wear out from the inside (cushioning) as well as the outside (tread) — replace them before the support is gone, not just when the sole looks worn.
The parent's guide
If you are choosing for a child, this is the section that matters most — because a child's whole kit scales together. Racket, ball, court and net all shrink as a set, and getting them right is the difference between a child who can rally and learn and one who struggles and quits.
Size the equipment to the child as they are now — never buy bigger "to grow into."

Choosing a junior racket
Match the length to the child's height, not their birthday: as a guide, 19–21 in to roughly 105 cm tall, 23 in to about 115–125 cm, 25 in to about 125–135 cm, 26 in to about 135–145 cm, and the full 27 in once they pass about 145 cm. Junior frames are aluminium, pre-strung, light (≈180–250 g) and oversized-headed for forgiveness, with a small grip (size 0 or under).
How we got here
The specifications in this chapter are not eternal; they are the result of a century of change. For most of tennis history rackets were wood, heavy and small-headed (around 65 sq in), strung with natural gut at modest tension. They were beautiful and unforgiving.
The breakthroughs came fast in the 1970s and 80s: the first metal frames, then the oversize head that suddenly gave ordinary players a usable sweet spot, then graphite, which let frames be light, stiff and large all at once. Head sizes climbed from the 60s into the 100s, weights fell, and power surged. Polyester strings arrived later and rewrote spin entirely. The 27-inch length survived all of it as the sensible default — which is why, even now, professionals play frames not so different in size from a wooden racket, even as the materials inside them have changed beyond recognition.
How it's measured — reading a spec sheet
Where do these figures come from, and how do you read them? Manufacturers measure frames on dedicated machines — a diagnostic centre that reads swingweight, balance and stiffness precisely, plus simple scales and balance boards. The numbers printed on a frame and on the spec page come from these instruments.
When you read a spec sheet, watch one trap above all: weight and swingweight are often quoted unstrung, but you will always play the racket strung — with strings and an overgrip adding roughly 15–20 g and changing the balance. Compare strung-to-strung, or know which one you are looking at. And remember that two rackets with the same static weight can feel completely different if their swingweight and balance differ — which is exactly why swingweight is the number worth learning.
Adaptive equipment dimensions
Tennis is played by everyone, and the equipment adapts to the player. The dimensions here belong in this chapter; the full story of each discipline lives in its own chapter later in the encyclopedia.
- Wheelchair tennis uses a standard racket, standard ball and the full standard court with a net at the usual 0.914 m. The adaptation is the sport wheelchair itself — a lightweight chair with strongly cambered (angled) wheels for fast turning and an anti-tip wheel — and a single rule change allowing the ball to bounce twice. The gear you hit with is unchanged.
- Blind & low-vision tennis uses a sound-adapted ball — a larger, soft foam ball with a rattle inside so players can hear it — on a smaller court with raised tactile lines that can be felt underfoot, a lower net, and a number of permitted bounces that varies with the player's level of sight.
- Deaf tennis uses completely standard equipment — the same rackets, balls, court and net as the hearing game. The adaptation is not in the gear at all; it is visual and communicative — line calls and signals shown rather than spoken. A reminder that "adaptive" does not always mean different equipment; sometimes it means a different way of sharing information around the same equipment.
